Hi, I'm Garrett Downs!
Nothing Special might be a new name, but I've been building cool web stuff since 2009. I specialize in creating web applications and developer tools for niche platforms like webOS, Firefox OS, and now KaiOS. These underpowered and poorly documented platforms require a higher degree of creativity and technical skill, making the work not only more rewarding but also a lot of fun.
I starting with developing open source apps, themes, and patches for Palm's webOS devices. My projects quickly became some of the most popular on the platform, catching the eye of major outlets like ZDNet and Engadget, along with numerous smaller tech blogs and the broader community. I worked with Palm's developer program to beta test new versions of webOS and provide feedback. They also made sure I always had the latest hardware to test my projects on.
After webOS was discontinued, I moved on to Firefox OS and joined Mozilla's Developer Engagement program. They generously sent me a Flame phone and I continued working on cool new things, like the first podcast app on the platform, Foxcasts. The app was popular with the Firefox OS community and had thousands of happy users. Sadly, Firefox OS was not long for this world.
Now I'm developing for KaiOS, a mobile OS that was forked from Firefox OS and runs on low powered smart feature phones without touch screens. I've created a number of apps for KaiOS, including RainCloud, a SoundCloud client, and Foxcasts Lite, a podcast player. There are many more apps, libraries, and developer tools in my catalog and plans for even more!
I've built countless other things over the years for any platform that can run web apps. Over the last 15 years, I've gained extensive experience in planning, designing, building, releasing, and supporting professional-grade software that has reached thousands of users.
